Resetting respectively disabling the ink filling level display for HP 950, 950 XL, HP 951, 951 XL

 

At the moment, it is not possible to permanently reset the chip on HP 950, 951 cartridges. This means that in order to be able to continue printing after refilling the cartridge, you have to replace the original chip with a replacement chip (see ad at the right) or temporarily disable the filling level display. These instructions describe how to disable the filling level display.

When you insert a refilled HP cartridge into the printer, you will see the following error message on the screen of your computer (first picture). Proceed as follows: Confirm this message (truthfully) by pressing "No".

HP 950, 950 resetting or disabling the chip

Another window opens (second picture). You can either cancel the printing process or continue printing with your refilled cartridge. If you want to continue printing, please press "Continue".
 

A third and last window opens (third picture), warning you that, among others, the ink filling level will no longer be displayed. Confirm this message by pressing "OK".
Now all you have to do is disable the filling level display on the printer. For this purpose, briefly press the blinking paper feed button. This deactivates the ink filling level display on the printer and the computer, and you can now continue printing.

Second refill of HP 950, 951 cartridges:
 

If you want to refill your HP 950, 951 cartridges a second time and continue printing, this is trickier. At the moment, there is only one way to do this:
You have to insert an HP 950 or 951 cartridge of the respective colour that has not counted down to zero, i.e. that is not recognised as empty. The ink filling level is reactivated. Now you can reinsert the refilled cartridge.

The corresponding letter on the display and the paper feed button start blinking again. Press the paper feed button again and everything returns to normal, i.e. the filling level display is deactivated and the letter below the empty column on the display stops blinking.
However, the warning regarding counterfeit or refilled cartridges reappears (picture 1). Close this window by pressing the red "X" in the top right corner. The printer prints a status report, then you can continue printing as usual.

If you want to refill your HP 950 or HP 951 cartridges more than once or twice, we recommend buying a set of XL cartridges and using a set of non-XL cartridges or starter cartridges for the reset process after the second refill. Then you can print with the XL cartridges and refill them, while you use the small cartridges for the brief reactivation of the filling level display. The small cartridges have to have the correct filling level and must not be emptied! They serve only for resetting the filling level.
